The International PPE Conference at Witten/Herdecke University is a student-led initiative that brings together Bachelor, Master and PhD students as well as scholars from diverse backgrounds to share and discuss their ideas and knowledge.

Rooted in the science of Cognitive Psychology, framing plays an important role in the way we perceive, organize and communicate about reality. In today’s discourse, be it about political or economic issues, it is an ever present tool used on all sides to garner certain reactions, behaviors or opinions.

In recent years, framing has played a pivotal role in elections and everyday politics all around the world. Particularly in times of resurging populism in Europe and the United States of America, it becomes a crucial strategic question to have a second look at how issues are framed. What is the role of framing when discussing economic and political issues such as health care, equality, education or environmental policy? How does social media play into the formation of frames in people’s minds? To which extent do politicians use frames consciously to influence voters’ decisions? And how can these trends be judged through the lenses of various philosophical theorems?

The student paper and poster sessions are the heart of our conference. By presenting your academic research, you are playing an important part in shaping our conference and making it the interactive, student led event that it has grown into over the course of the last three years. Moreover, both poster and paper sessions provide you with the unique opportunity to present your research in front of a diverse audience of experts and students, making it great practice for any career you are aspiring towards, but especially one in scientific research.

Poster World Café

Posters are a very common sight at natural science conferences and the social sciences are starting to recognise the benefits. This is a great chance to get practice in this growing trend.

All posters will be presented in a world cafe format at the conference. Poster are a tool to present your paper in a visual stimulating way and gain attention.

This allows you to start more intimate conversations with other scholars who are interested in your topic. If a mutual interest is found, you can then send them your full paper. Posters can also be a way to test an idea and get feedback before then embarking on further research.

It is also a great format for participants to get a brief introduction to a range of topics with the freedom to dive into the subjects that interest them the most.
